John Rubio, Associate Superintendent East Side Union High School District, is originally from Wilmington, Delaware.

Dr. John Rubio started his career in education as a Teach for America (TFA) teacher in 1992 in the city of Compton, and also in South Central, Los Angeles at a K-12 School as a secondary teacher immediately after the 1992 Los Angeles riots.

He worked with the non-profit Los Angeles Educational Partnership (LAEP) during the 1990’s LEARN educational reform movement in Los Angeles as the lead representative to LAUSD, to United Teachers Los Angeles (UTLA), and to UCLA, where he received his doctoral degree.

He began his administrative career serving briefly as one of four Assistant Principals at Santa Monica High School, while also serving as an academic coach for the district, and in 1998 he was recruited by San Francisco Unified based on the recommendation of the founder of the Frederick Douglas Academy in Harlem, and author of Nothing’s Impossible, Dr. Lorraine Monroe.

Dr. John Rubio has also served as an elementary, middle, and high school administrator, as the leader for Educational Technology for all of San Francisco Unified (where he supported over 100 principals and the entire district), as an Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services and Curriculum, as Superintendent of the small Emery Unified School District in Emeryville, California.

At Emery, he spent four years as the lead district negotiator, and collaborator, with CTA and CSEA in his role as Superintendent, and has extensive experience in systems to support school districts, teachers and staff, as well as in School Construction, successful bonds, and legal and Human Resources issues.

Currently at East Side Union in San Jose as an Associate Superintendent, serving 22,000 students, he maintains the difficult balance as the lead negotiator and collaborator with the teacher and classified unit bargaining groups, while also being the lead investigator for Human Resources.

John has an extensive amount of experience, has worked closely with School Equity efforts in the Bay Area, has coached principals, and currently lives with his family in Burlingame, California.

John believes in running very fiscally efficient school districts, with high quality staff, in order to have as much money available for compensation for district employees.
